Responsibilities
- Support consulting teams in automotive product development projects, including product teardown analysis, supplier development recommendations, and clean sheet costing.
- Help clients optimize product design to reduce costs, time-to-market, and improve quality attributes.
- Conduct surveys and diagnostics to identify improvement opportunities within R&D and product development organizations.
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of McKinsey’s knowledge base on product development methodologies, best practices, and frameworks.
- Provide cross-industry and cross-geography insights, collaborating with global teams to deliver high-quality client service.
- Support sustainable capability-building for client R&D organizations through process redesign, modular product design, and margin transformation initiatives.
Skills and Qualifications
Required:
- 1–4 years of experience in parts or systems development within automotive OEMs or Tier 1 suppliers.
- Engineering degree in Mechanical, Automobile, Electrical, Production, or Electronics.
- Strong understanding of product development, design optimization, and cost-reduction strategies.
- Hands-on experience with design-led cost optimization, material/specification changes, product architecture/layout optimization, and factor of safety considerations.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, product/process costing, and latest industry trends and innovations.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and decision-making skills, including the ability to disaggregate issues and recommend solutions.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience in multi-national or cross-functional teams.
- Ability to work collaboratively, handle changing priorities, and adapt to unstructured environments.
Preferred:
- MBA with specialization in Operations or Product Development.
- Experience in multi-industry engagements or cross-geography consulting projects.
