Responsibilities

  • Work on-site with clients (~60–80% of time) to solve complex product development challenges.
  • Conduct product design rationalization based on competitive analysis, customer insights, and cost optimization.
  • Support new product development, reducing time-to-market, optimizing costs, and enhancing product quality.
  • Develop zero-base cost models, propose modular solutions, and optimize product architecture.
  • Analyze product value chains to deliver end-to-end solutions for industrial machinery and equipment.
  • Build and maintain internal knowledge assets, contributing to McKinsey’s expertise in product development.
  • Collaborate across geographies and industries, delivering global impact and innovative solutions.

Skills and Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering from Tier 1 institute; Master’s/MBA in Operations preferred.
  • 2–5 years of experience in product design, cost optimization, part development, R&D, or strategic sourcing.
  • Deep expertise in industrial machinery design, including process machinery, structural/peripheral equipment, and integration systems (piping, cabling, motors, transformers, switchgear).
  • Hands-on experience in design-led cost optimization, layout optimization, specification changes, and product value chain improvements.
  • Knowledge of product/process costing, design optimization, and insights generation.
  • Strong problem-solving, analytical, and communication skills, with the ability to present complex ideas to senior stakeholders.
  • Flexibility to work in dynamic, unstructured environments with evolving priorities.
  • Fluent in English; proficiency in additional languages is an advantage.

Preferred:

  • Exposure to heavy industries, chemicals, electric power, and natural gas sectors.
  • Experience with CAD tools, Excel-based modeling, and analytics platforms.
  • Ability to synthesize insights into actionable recommendations for clients.
